Wattwil South Grounds & Parking Facility
The signage design elements used on the Wattwil South grounds project are unobtrusively informative and are absolutely to be understood as an artistic intervention.
The crosses inlaid into the pavement, designed by the landscaper as a reference to Wattwil’s textile past, lay the groundwork for the lettering – a distinctive “cross-stitch” design that allows passers-by to discover various kinds of messages, such as “Grüezi Wattwil” (Hello Wattwil).
The cross-stitch lettering is used especially in the staircases leading down to the parking facility, as well as in the parking facility itself. Car drivers too are welcomed, by a cordial “Grüezi Toggenburg”. The generously proportioned guidance signs, in blue as those used on the exterior, have been stenciled directly onto the white walls.
For better orientation, and to add dabs of color, the wall sections are illuminated in the colors of their respective destinations – orange standing for Migros, red for SOB, green for BWZT, and blue for the neutral exits.
As on the exterior pavement, the pedestrian zones in the parking facility are inlaid with crosses, which are also used in a playful manner to form the pictographs indicating the locations of women’s parking lots and restrooms.
The decorative crosses lend the Wattwil South grounds a distinctive character. This persuasive overall concept will undoubtedly have a lasting effect.
